We do not think so, but for sure the hemp ales are of amazing flavours and taste. A “very special” beverage to discover.

420 – The cannabis number.

420 is related to marijuana and hashish consumption, connected to cannabis-oriented celebrations that take place annually on April 20 (4/20 in US form)

This year, 420 was very special, as only occurs once per century, 4/20/20 (in US form) for all the fans of Mary Jane (a.k. Marijuana or as it appears on the famous song of Rick James) East 9th Brewing (a.k. Doss Blockos) released their Merry Jane Pineapple OG, a Hemp Ale in collaboration with Snoop Dog. A juicy hip-hopped fresh hemp session ale with a punchy pineapple tang.

A couple of weeks ago, also related with the cannabis number, our friends at Aether Brewing, turned 4 and to celebrate their anniversary they launched a Quad Hopped Hemp Infused Double IPA, Quadraphonic. A fantastic IPA using hemp products such as seeds and hopping the beer, not once or twice – FOUR TIMES.

Will we see more hemp ales releasing soon?

We believe, it will become trending and more and more Aussie breweries will follow our American fellows.

The hemp beers are not brewed directly from hemp, the process is the same as any beer following the German beer purity laws (water, hops, barley or malt and yeast). Once the brewer decides to use hemp products, due to the similarity as plants, the hemps products are added at the time the beer is hopped, creating the distinguished flavour.

They called "hemped" process, first they hop and then they “hemp”, typically after the boiling process. After several weeks of patient wait (they must allow the yeast to ferment and the hemp to become infused) the beer is ready to be consumed.

Hemp infused beers, have a flavour profile depending on the cannabis variety used to infuse the beer. Beers are described as refreshing, of light body having a fantastic “herbal” flavour with caramel taste and light bitter finish.

Dare to try a hemp ale directly from the brewer?

Jump to Only Craft Beer and select Quadraphonic from Aether, which is available by itself or combined with other award-winning beers from Aether.

Something fancier, then choose Merry Jane Pineapple OG from East 9.
