A Word with... 7th Day Brewery

All they wanted was a local Pilsner to drink after a day of surfing. Was that too much to ask?

That was was kicked off 7th Day Brewery in Brookvale, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The hunt for a decent craft Pilsner led to a brewery that sponsors local sport teams and donates money to fund clean drinking water for communities who need it.

But at the end of the day, the core business of 7th Day Brewery is honest, delicious local beer. As head brewer and co-owner Mike Beresford-Jones says, “Our job is to make people happy. To bring mates together over a beer and and great food. Honestly, as a job what could be better!”

We asked Mike a few questions to help us get to know 7th Day a little better.

Tell us about how 7th Day Brewery came about.

“7th Day Brewery was born in a garage and on our local beach. A few of us surfing mates were lamenting that we couldn’t buy a decent craft Pilsner. All the craft beer at that time was big IPAs. As home brewers we knew we could make a great Pilsner and so we set about crowdfunding to make our first commercial batch. That was so successful that we went on to gypsy brew more beers and that drew in investors keen to take it to the next level.

“The taproom in Brookvale opened its door in September of 2018 with a 1000L three vessel brewhouse and 8000L of fermentation and maturation tanks.”

7th Day has an ethos of “Drink Good, Do Good”. What does that mean?

“People often ask us if we are religious and our answer is simply that ‘Beer is our Religion’.

We were born out of the kindness and support of the local community and we try to give back that love as much as we can through out ‘Drink Good, Do Good’ motto.

“Waves 4 Water have held fundraising events here and we give 10c per can of our RIPL Seltzer back to them to help fund clean drinking water to communities that need it.

“Since our inception we have grown exponentially, but still hold true to those original values of mates and community.”

What does being an independent brewery mean to you?

“We are fiercely independent. It allows us to support our local community. We aren’t beholden to some large overseas corporation that pretends to be local and sponsor, say a footy stadium. That’s just advertising in disguise.

“We can honestly get out and support small teams who really benefit from our dollar. We can put part of our profits into charities that really need our dollar. Being independent keep us free in an age of deception and manipulation.”

What’s something that sets 7th Day apart from other breweries?

We’d like to think it's our beer and the family friendly atmosphere of our taproom. We try to make beer that is drinkable. We don’t scream about how hoppy it is or have massive advertising budgets. Just honest, delicious local beer.”

If you could have a beer with anyone, who would it be?

“It would have to be God. We could sit back with a 7th Day beer and see all the good shit we had created that week.”

People from all around Australia shop on Only Craft Beer. What’s something you’d say to someone who’s never tried 7th Day before?

“Give it a go, mate. You won’t be sorry.”

As the days are finally growing longer, which 7th Day beer are you itching to share with mates by the carton, and why?

“That’s got to be our XPA. It’s the perfect crisp summer beer.”
